Keep Failing

I teach my daughter, who’s six, that falling down is a part of learning.

I teach her that she will not become better at something, unless she fails at it first (and a lot).

( I also teach her to wear her helmet and made her put it on right after this fall.)

What’s incredible to me, is that kids fail all the time.  Daily most likely.

But as adults we begin to think that we are beyond that stage of learning and failure starts to become “bad” or “unwanted”.

And this type of thinking stunts our growth.

In my humble opinion, failing is a sign of truly living.  Failing at something, especially as an adult, is proof of courage to try something new.  And being vulnerable enough to fall down.

So maybe someday Collins will be a pro-skateboarder.  Or maybe not.  But at the very least she has tried and the failures all along the way will help develop her willingness to take risks …

And show her that failure can be her teacher, not her enemy.

Same for me.

I’ve probably taken be the biggest risks of my life post age 35.  At this age, failure is more costly.  It’s more embarrassing.  And it’s harder to accept.

But the more it costs the more I learn.

The better I become.

The harder I try the next time.

Failure > Stagnant and Stunted all day everyday for me.
